Speaker: Ron Lane
Ron Lane,
Director of the County of San
Diego's Office of Emergency
Services since Feb 2006, was the
Director of the County's
Emergency Operations Center
during the recent 2007
Firestorm. Ron and his staff
coordinated the overall County
response to disasters.
The Office
of Emergency Services is
responsible for alerting and
notifying appropriate agencies
when the disaster strikes;
coordinates all agencies that
respond; ensures resources are
available and mobilized in times
of disasters; and develops plans
for response and recovery from
disasters.
He joined
the county in April 1989 after
receiving a Master's in Public
Administration from San Diego
State University. His
assignments in the County
include working for Planning and
Land Use, the North County
Municipal Court, Public Safety
Group and the Department of
Child Support Services.
Ron Lane
will present an overview of the
devastating 2007 San Diego
Firestorm that burned over
360,000 acres, and resulted in
over 1,700 homes being destroyed
and 10 deaths. Special emphasis
will be on the successful
evacuation of over 500,000
residents; establishment of over
45 evacuation shelters,
including 2 mega-shelters; how 3
hospitals were evacuated; and
how public communications were
maintained throughout the
disaster. The presentation also
provides six key lessons learned
during the firestorm and the
recovery phase that will assist
other emergency managers in
their preparations
